I've mentioned it before on these pages, but it needs repeating...as an artist, you are an entrepreneur. And as an entrepreneurial business, marketing is one of your biggest hurdles. It's marketing that brings fans to your website, to your concerts, and ultimately end up buying your music and t-shirts.
So what's your marketing plan? What are you doing online to get noticed and to spread your personal brand? And perhaps even more importantly, how are you delivering that message?
There's tons and tons of social media sites out there for you to be a part of. But whether you're using Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, or whatever the next flavour of the week is...you need to understand how to make the most of each connection you make, without turning people off.
Online, your goal is keep people intrigued, turning them into a fan who wants more from you, while sharing you with their friends and creating new fans.
So how do you do that?
Well, for starters...don't just send out tweet after tweet advertising your music, pushing it down peoples throats. That gets stale, fast. You need to pull people in (push marketing vs. pull marketing).
In the online space, people don't want messages crammed down their throats like we do on TV, radio, and in print. People want to feel connected with their music and products on a personal level. And that job lies in your hands as you deliver each blog post and tweet. You need to pull people into your messages. And if you're good at it, it can explode...fast.
So here's a quick little list for you to follow that's easy to remember and that you can keep in the back of your mind as you type out each of your daily tweets...
