The smaller than expected crowd didn’t stop Burning Borders from doing what they do best: put on an entertaining rock show for fans.
As part of a cross Canadian tour that brought them into Toronto for Canadian Music Week, the Vancouver-based band travelled great distances to showcase their latest album, Yesterday’s Gone, to the crowd at Neutral.
Not much for standing still, singer Brian Reed was walking among the crowd up front, no more than two feet away, interacting with the audience the whole time. Putting the mic in front of him from time to time, he encouraged the fans to sing along. He wasn’t satisfied with people not participating.
You wouldn’t know he had throat problems from the previous show, but he did. He was suffering from laryngitis. If that’s how he sounds when he has throat problems, imagine how he sounds when he’s completely healthy.

The band performed a slew of tracks from Yesterday’s Gone to a receptive crowd. The intensity increased as the set went along, jamming through heavy tracks like “Sleep”, “Cold” and their next single, “Disposable”. The band really shine on standout tracks “Beauty School Drop Out” and the title track. Surprisingly, one song omitted from the set fans would have loved to have heard was the first single, “Leading”.
What made up for the disappearance of the single was their cover of Avenged Sevenfold’s “Unholy Confessions”. The cover was performed flawlessly, just like the rest of the performance.
Yesterday maybe gone, but Burning Borders is here to stay.
