This week we discuss a recent article from the Tunecore blog titled,
Don’t Tell People You Are Broke. We talk about how artists need to be conscious of what they say, understanding how some comments can hurt your goals.

Do potential fans want to hear you whining about how little money you have?
Or do fans want you
to inspire them?

Trying to shame fans into buy your album, "so you can eat dinner", isn't a good marketing tactic to connect with new fans and make a sale.

Your comments can have a lasting effect on a person's impression of you, no matter how harmless they were intended. What you say can make people choose to not support you.

Check out this short little episode and leave a comment with the crazy things you've seen bands publicly say online.

Join Brian Thompson, Michael Brandvold & co-host, 80's rockstar Greg Kihn for an all-new episode each Wednesday.

This week is about
recognizing new opportunities for your band. Some can help your career, many will harm it.

The only constant in life is change.

So to have a long career, you have to be willing to
embrace the idea of reinventing yourself and naturally evolving when it makes sense. This will require you to take advantage of new opportunities that cross your path and for you to explore.

In doing so,
trusting your gut instinct is crucial.
hello my name is opportunity

You must follow your feelings.

Ask yourself the following questions:
- does this go against what i stand for?
- does it betray my brand?
- does this speak to my passions?
- does this defy my sense of purpose?
- what can this lead to from here?

Should I go for this or not?

Press play and listen in as we discuss it.

Oh! The Masks We Wear!

Filed in:
** image by DeviantArt user Cvet04ek

oh! the masks we wear
the surreptitious pretences
we oft lay bare

oh! the suits we don
what are we all scared of?
what are we hiding from?

oh! the things we do
for the approval of others
what if, we only knew?

oh! how easier things would be
if no one had to pretend
and it was easy to just be me

oh! to be inspired
to live a life unique
authentic and desired

oh! if we could just shed
our cultural cloth
and no longer be led

by this!
costume of identity
our uniform of obsession
our personal repression

conformity

we all have a uniform we wear.

to fit in, so as to not be judged by those whom we seek company. to not be noticed as different from those whom we align ourselves with.

these
disguises aren't relegated to the clothes upon our backs. they echo in our words and mannerisms, and reverberate through our cliquey actions and reactions.

“In most of our human relationships, we spend much of our time reassuring one another that our costumes of identity are on straight.” ― Ram Dass

it may oft be referred to as peer pressure, but there is no gaggle of guys pointing and laughing, persuading you to do what you've done. no, the real pressure comes from within. for many, it isn't restricted to your years on the schoolyard, it may never go away.

sure, it's our human desire to fit in. to have friends and to feel an affinity with others. to share common thoughts and feelings, aches and pains, pleasures and desires.

aligning ourselves with like-minded individuals lessens the pain of the inevitable loneliness and temporal impermanence of life.

yet as comforting as it can be to nestle into a close knit and similar group, comfort isn't kind. it can be destructive and defer development of your true self and potential. it can pull a veil over your eyes, lulling you into complacency, distracting you from personal discovery and progression.

your uniform can take your hopes and dreams and lock them in a box for none to see, tossing away the key, for fear of judgement and hypocrisy.

what is the uniform you've donned?
what is the cultural costume you've put on?

perhaps it's an unkempt beard, bespectacled with black rims. or perhaps it's a flannel with a fixie, or maybe it's the brands you buy and the flags you wave, or the beers you drink and the car you drive. maybe it's the teams you mock and the music you rock. perhaps it's your family's religion, something you don't even believe in.

with each uniform we wear comes an accompanying ritual of sorts. some have their trips to the mall, others have their monday night football. some have shots at the bar and spanks on the ass, others have sushi and a late night yoga class.

many do these things to fit in. but it's the few, who do it regardless of you, who do it to be authentically true.

so i ask you now, are you wearing a mask?

have you donned an unfitting uniform? does the costume of your clique no longer fit? do your rituals no longer resonate with your soul?

it's time to be you, to find your heart's true desire. let go of the status quo.

create your own identity, unfettered by the crowd.
cast away the shackles that bind you to the beliefs of others.

toss aside those ritualistic rites, done only to align you with cool. shouldn't that should have ended way back in high school?

how to sell your merch
Download The Rock Star Branding Podcast on Apple iTunes:
http://itunes.thornybleeder.com

Join Brian Thompson, Michael Brandvold  & co-host, 80's rockstar Greg Kihn as we reveal some merch lessons from a musician who's toured with some of the biggest bands in the world.

Rock n' Roll is not just about the music, it's also a merch business... and to a large extent, a people business. Every fan counts. You need to leave a trail of fans behind you who love and remember you for many years to come.

What will your fans say about you in twenty years?

Create a friendly and open environment for sales to occur at your shows. Connect with people on a real and personable level, and create fans for life. If you're only motivated by money, sex and fame… you won't get far. That's an extremely hollow premise to build a business on and has no longevity in it.

Online Influence Creates Offline Opportunities (or, How I Got on TV)

Filed in:

Brian Thompson from Thorny Bleeder and The DIY Daily, on CBC TV, March 8, 2013.
in years past it used to be that if a television station required an expert's voice for an opinion on a music or cultural story they would have gone to a radio DJ or to a record label executive. today however, they send a tweet to a blogger who records an indie podcast from his bachelor pad studio.

the social web has brought change to our cultural influencers and tastemakers.

yes, the paradigm shift continues.

the connection between online engagement with social media profiles, content marketing, and personal branding vs. the "real world" deepens. the lines have become blurred. online is no longer reserved for the nerdy and technologically elite.

if you don't have any online clout (or
Klout), and you aren't resonating with an online audience, your IRL (in real life) options will be limited.

online influence creates offline opportunities.

it's a fact.

this past friday i received a tweet from a reporter who works for the local
CBC Television Nightly News, asking if i was available to comment on a music story. i replied immediately, saying i was. forty-five minutes later a reporter and cameraman were in my house to interview me to capture my comments on a story they were running that evening.

now, i am not a Biebs (Justin Bieber) fan, nor do i listen to pop music (or even the radio for that matter). but CBC wanted an "
expert's opinion" from a Music Marketer, and because of the continual stream of content i share on my website and my active presence on Twitter, i was the first guy they thought of.

the moral of the story?

if you don't appear in someone's online feeds and streams, you risk not being thought of.

my interview with CBC was about 15 minutes long, but as you can see from the final story that aired below… all but three or four sentences were cut and edited out. that's the nature of the beast though. regardless, it was a cool little surprise and i had a lot of fun doing it.

reminder: continual online efforts pay off… if you do it in a way that connects with people without turning them off.

good things come to those who blog.

CBC Nightly News here:

80's Rock Star & Radio DJ Greg Kihn Joins The Rock Star Branding Podcast as Special Guest Co-Host

Filed in:

Rock-Star-Branding-Podcast-COVER-2013-300x300
The Rock Star Branding podcast, presented by Brian Thompson and Michael Brandvold from The Music Biz Weekly, announces that Greg Kihn will be joining the show as the new special guest co-host.

Greg Kihn, known for his top 10 singles The Breakup Song and Jeopardy, is also a radio morning veteran with 16 years under his belt hosting a morning show in the San Francisco market. The Rock Star Branding podcast will debut with Greg Kihn on March 13th. The show can be found on Apple iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Blackberry Podcasts, SoundCloud, thornybleeder.com, MichaelBrandvold.com and of course GregKihn.com.

Greg Kihn, new guest co-host on The Rock Star Branding Podcast with Brian Thompson and Michael Brandvold
On joining the Rock Star Branding podcast Greg Kihn had this to say, “Michael approached me at the perfect time. I just finished writing my soon to be released book Rubber Soul and was getting the urge to get behind a mic again and tell my road stories. The Rock Star Branding podcast is a perfect outlet for me to impart my experience in music and radio in short, easy to digest tidbits, just don’t eat them too fast and choke.”

Co-host Michael Brandvold said, “When Brian Thompson and I decided to retool the show I had a crazy idea about seeing if Greg Kihn would be interested in joining us. Having listened to Greg on the air for years I knew he had the insight that only a rock star would have… he has toured the world as a MTV star.”

Brian Thompson added, “We always have a lot of fun on this podcast as we joke around and share war stories from our own experiences and from those whose careers we study. It’s going to be an absolute riot and a pleasure to have someone with Greg’s storied past join us and share his well-travelled tales with our audience.”

Announcement: Brian Thompson to Teach Music Business Course at Langara College in May 2013

Filed in:

Langara College - Music Business Course with Brian Thompson
Starting in May 2013, I'll be teaching the Music Business class at Vancouver's Langara College for two of their courses, the Electronic Music Production Program and the Singer-Songwriter Certificate Program.

I'm really excited to dive in with this cool new opportunity, not only because I'll be teaching my very own class but also because
I've custom created the course curriculum myself.

I've taken my over twenty years of experience in the music industry, rolled it together with my social media marketing savvy, and have created a very unique and well rounded course serving as an introduction to the music business and do-it-yourself marketing for independent musicians.

It's a one of a kind class unlike any other.

http://itunes.thornybleeder.com

After publishing 94 episodes, we decided to go video.

We're now on YouTube.

The Music Biz Weekly is a weekly podcast co-hosted by
me (Brian Thompson) & Michael Brandvold. Each week we interview movers and shakers in the music business and discuss music marketing techniques for the DIY independent musician.

Join us for a 50 min. discussion on the problem musicians face by feeling like they have to create a product for a market that doesn't want to buy one.

Artists find themselves creating a commodity for an audience who has become accustomed to not paying for music.

What options are left for artists to monetize their music and brands?

What can you do, what can you create, what can you sell? The experience and the emotions. Think and look outside the box for the experience that your fans want to be part of. The music business has changed and you need to think differently as the market no longer wants to buy just the music alone.

Press play and hear what to have say.

You Must Be Brave Enough To Lead With Your Heart

Filed in:

if you've got nothing to say, then why should anyone listen? if you want to be heard, you need to have an opinion.
if you've got nothing to say, then why should anyone listen?

if you want to be heard, you need to have an opinion, an original thought, a reason for doing what you do.

you need to be able to stand behind it and believe in it. to have conviction for your beliefs.

if you don't believe in what you're saying:

your words will mean nothing. they will be empty. they will be meaningless echoes from those whom you emulate. they will be that which has already been done. your words will fall flat upon ears, for they will bring nothing new to an already finished conversation.

you need to matter.
not to be disregarded.
or forgotten.

so if you want to mean something...
you must be brave enough to lead with your heart.

Filed in:

rock-and-roll
The Music Biz Weekly is a weekly podcast co-hosted by me (Brian Thompson) & Michael Brandvold. Each week we interview movers and shakers in the music business and discuss music marketing techniques for the DIY independent musician.

Join us for a 40 min. discussion on The Psychology of Selling Rock And Roll. We got the idea to chat about this topic from a new article I found written by rock journalist Juliette Jagger.

Our discussion addresses the reality of
selling music as a product, the exaggerations and mis-truths in music marketing (and all marketing for that matter), and the mindset hurdles that independent artists need to overcome if they want to make money from their art.

Live Appearances Update from Brian

Brian Thompson from Thorny Bleeder and The DIY Daily :: Creative Coach, Marketing Mentor, Music Consultant, Digital Strategist
This year is starting to shape up nicely.

Unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances I won't be at Midem as planned. For anyone who was planning on attending my session, I'm sorry about this scheduling change, however I'm confident they'll find another intriguing speaker to fill my shoes and to kick some ass.

I just confirmed speaking engagements in Calgary and Edmonton for sessions with Alberta Music on February 12 and 13th.

This Thursday I return to Nimbus School of Recording Arts for the first of another four weeks of guest lectures with their Music Business Class.

Next Monday, I'll be dropping in for a guest session at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) for one of their Social Media & Blogging classes.

I'll also be speaking at the IC Virtual Music Conference and Expo, an online event, from February 26-28. Hmm... I'm still not sure what's happening with me and Canadian Music Week this year. There's some interest from organizers in me bing there, so hopefully that gets confirmed soon.

And if you happen to be in Fort McMurray, Alberta, it looks like I'll be there at the end of March to present an in-depth Advanced Social Media session.

I've been confirmed as a guest speaker at a Goth Convention on April 19 in Austin, Texas called Convergence XIX - Gathering ov Bats. How cool is that?

And lastly, I'll also be speaking at Social Media Camp in Victoria, BC on May 7.

Hit me up if there's something you'd like me to be involved with... I'd love to help out.

Feature Article on Brian Thompson in Vancouver Weekly

Filed in:

Vancouver Weekly Front Page with Brian Thompson
last week i sat down at a coffee shop for a very candid interview with Ricardo Khayatte from Vancouver Weekly. today, it's their featured article.

i gotta admit, i really don't like the word
Guru, it kinda gives me the willies. but, i'm totally honoured and humbled nonetheless by their incredibly kind words!

i've done tons of interviews in the past few years but this article took a pretty different angle and approach than all the rest, which was really cool to see. when you sit down for an interview you never know how it's going to turn out. thumbs up on this one!

The Rock Star Branding Podcast Ep. #44 - The Importance of Cover Art on Digital Downloads & Album Streams

Filed in:

Plenty of Colour - Discovery LP/Album
Join me (Brian Thompson), Michael Brandvold and Steve Jones for a short discussion on how digital album downloads and album streams have changed how an artist should think about their cover art.

It's all about context.

If a painting looks great on the wall, it doesn't it mean it will look great as your iTunes album cover art.

A great photo, picture or design doesn't necessarily make a great album cover.

Consider all of the detail which will be lost when that photo is reduced down to only 150 pixels wide.
If an artist wants to find new fans who are exploring random content online, they must create an engaging thumbnail.

Does your content match the medium in which its being consumed?

The Music Biz Weekly Podcast #87 - PledgeMusic Gives Insider Tips on Successful Crowdfunding

Filed in:

PledgeMusic
Join me (Brian Thompson) & Michael Brandvold for a 45 min. discussion on how to create a successful crowd funding music campaign with Jayce Varden, co-founder of PledgeMusic.

In case you've been too busy doing the backstroke in your Olympic-sized swimming pool, paid for by your major label advance…

the new business of making music is all about hands on, direct to fan, crowd funding.

And with good reason. It works… and everyone wins, fans and artist alike.

But launching a crowdfunding campaign is not a slam dunk. It takes a lot of planning, a lot of hands-on daily work, a network of existing and interested followers, and a desire to connect with your fans in new and creative ways.

Crowdfunding campaigns are a ton of work, but they're also incredibly rewarding.

Listen to the podcast below as PledgeMusic's Jayce Varden reveals important insider tips on how to execute a successful campaign.

What's the best crowd funding campaign you've seen so far? What made it stand out above all the rest? Have you done one yourself?

The Rock Star Branding Podcast Ep. #43 - How Important is an Album's Track Order in the Digital Age?

Filed in:

music in the cloud
Join me (Brian Thompson), Michael Brandvold and Steve Jones or a short discussion on how mp3 downloads and streaming services like Rdio and Spotify have impacted the fine art of sequencing an album's track order.

Sequencing tracks on an album has changed considerably over the years.

In the days when vinyl and cassettes ruled, you had two sides of music to play with. The physical separation of the music into two
album_vs_single
different pieces offered lots of room for creative programming.

That all changed when the CD took over though. Albums were then listened to in one lump piece, with no separation. If you wanted to listen to something else you still had to physically get up off your ass, walk over to your stereo and remove the compact disc.

But now, in the digital age a song can be skipped or shut off and a new artist and album can be selected with the click of a button or even a simple voice command.

So how has all of this changed the fine art of album sequencing?

Where should an artist place their best songs within the album?

What does an artist need to consider when programming the "flow" of their album?

Listen to the podcast below and then make sure to
leave a comment with your thoughts. How have you approached this issue with your album?

The varying degrees of rebellion, it's relative to who your audience is.
For some, being a rebel is out of the norm and gets you press and helps sell music, merch and tickets. For others, it's an everyday way of life.

But I will say this…

if you have to think about being a rebel and strategically plan for it…
then you're probably not a rebel. you're a poser.

Reverse engineer where you want to go and create your road map and game plan from there.

Find and create the pieces that fit the puzzle of what you want to build.

Tour Strategies for Bands: Think Small for Big Growth - The Rock Star Branding Podcast #36

Filed in:

Tour-Van1
Join me (Brian Thompson), Michael Brandvold and Steve Jones as we discuss Mumford & Sons' non-traditional touring strategy.

Through the relentless playing of smaller cities and smaller venues, the band was able to grow and develop into a worldwide banjo-playing, radio-charting phenomenon.

Their smart and effective tour strategy positioned them into having a larger "
share of mind" in each market since they were quite possibly the only show in town.

Whether you're playing in a town of forty thousand, a suburb of your home town, or a large city of four million... making a new fan is a new fan. They all count. They all matter. And the buzz is the same. And that buzz can spread... helping you land better gigs with bigger audiences in bigger cities.

For a developing artist, your biggest markets could quite possibly be the smallest cities which you may be tempted to overlook.

We also discuss the growing trend of
House Concerts.

What other kind of tour strategies have you seen work well for new bands? Leave a comment!

The Rock Star Branding Podcast #35: Rdio Offers Artists Finders Fee For Finding New Subscribers

Filed in:

rdio_imgres
Today we bring you a new chapter in the continuing war of online music subscription services, it's Rdio vs. Spotify. Rdio has just taken an innovative approach in the digital music space. Rdio has just launched Artist Program, a new feature that pays artists for bringing In new subscribers.

hero-jake-2
Rdio is offering a $10 finder fee to every artist who brings a new paid subscriber onto their platform.

With this, Rdio has now positioned themselves in the market as the "artist friendly" option, when compared to the much maligned Spotify.

It's affiliate sales.
But, will it work in the legal digital music space?

This new ecosystem for revenue earning can create some fun ideas for the creative music marketer. Such as sharing music and personalized playlists with their online fans.

Press play on the podcast below and listen to a 15 minute discussion with me (Brian Thompson), Michael Brandvold and Steve Jones about this and other affiliate earning opportunities which an artist can use to make additional money to support their career.

Our casual, up front and honest discussion touches on truthiness in marketing, buying fans and plays and listens (or gaming the system), and being careful who you work with. We also touch on a little known Facebook feature, Interest Lists.

At the end of the podcast I mention one of the most commonly asked questions I get from musicians, along with a recommended blog post which I think every artist should read:

33 Ways to Make More Time in Your Life For Music-Making.
Check it out here.

keep calm and dont be a dick
Join Brian Thompson and Michael Brandvold for a 35 min. discussion on how not to be a dick when self-promoting.

We talk about ways to stay relevant with your fans so they're paying attention to you when you need them the most and other bits of non-dickish marketing protocol.

"Selling" can be difficult and uncomfortable for some, but it's incredibly necessary… if you want to make any money doing what you love. Click play below to hear some of our tips on how to go about this.

While Michael is sweatin' to the oldies and suckin' on lozenges (
he's sick), Brian reads a recent blog post he wrote titled Guilt As A Sales Technique (found here) to get the conversation started.

worst band names ever
Join Brian Thompson, Michael Brandvold & Steve Jones for a short 12 minute discussion on the various reasons why certain support acts are chosen for tours, including helping to sell tickets or appealing to an entirely different demographic.

Some of the bands we discuss are Kool & The Gang opening up for Van Halen on their 2012 tour, Poison opening for KISS in 2005, Tragically Hip with a local opener in the Caribbean who did a cover of their biggest song before their headline set, and Bruce Springsteen not having any support acts whatsoever.

SPECIAL: Live Video Hangout & Acoustic Performance by Billy the Kid (FREE) this Sunday 6pm @thornybleeder

Billy the Kid - Pledge Music Album Funding Campaign
I haven't done a live video internet hangout chat thingy in ages and ages. And that's why this live and free interactive event is super special.

Join me on my UStream page this Sunday, July 22 at 6pm PST where I will be joined by my dear friend and special guest Billy Pettinger, aka Billy the Kid.

Billy is in the middle of a Pledge Music campaign for an upcoming album with producer Jamie Candiloro, the guy behind some killer Ryan Adams and R.E.M. records. Check out Jamie's discography here.

Billy and I will just be hanging out and talking, and chatting with viewers of course… but Billy will also be bringing along her guitar, so yes… some live acoustic performances are definitely going down.

Last time we did this, Billy wrote a song with our online audience. It was pretty rad.
