Featured Artist: The Rebellion

Filed in:
The Rebellion - New Album, Spring 2011

MP3: The Rebellion
Ocean Breeze

This week's featured artist from our
Get Thorny 3 freebie download compilation (get it here) is our very own boys from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan... The Rebellion. The track you're listening to above is a brand new track for 2011 that is only available on Get Thorny 3... a Thorny Bleeder exclusive!

The Rebellion - Josh Palmer
With influences like Muse, Coldplay, The Police, Jeff Buckley and Jimmy Hendrix, The Rebellion's music and anthemic spirit has allowed them to grow a solid fan base, grass roots style, by playing tons of shows and never taking no for an answer. Their 2010 Thorny Bleeder debut album titled Time received lots of buzz and attention, including hitting some music bloggers' Best of The Year lists.

Expect to hear a lot more from these guys in the coming months. A brand new album is now complete and ready to roll, with plans for a late Spring release. There will also be a new video or two, a new (old) tour bus, and lots of miles on the road as they take their show to as many towns and cities as possible. The band also recently finished recording a live performance broadcast for a CBC Radio special called The Cold Road (air date has yet to be announced).

2011 should be a breakout year for these boys. The Rebellion has only begun!

Featured Artist: Christopher Arruda

Filed in:
Christopher Arruda

MP3: Christopher Arruda
Olympus At Noon

This week's featured artist from Get Thorny 3, our free download compilation available here, is Christopher Arruda.

Christopher Arruda came very close to never making music again.

Having spent his late teens and early twenties fronting popular rock band The Lady Esther and touring with ambitious post-rock outfit Open, Parachute!, the twenty-six year old artist spent a year and a half trying to live what he thought was a normal life. “I had a job, a girlfriend and a home. I’d given up on music because I’d never been able to succeed. I really thought I had all the ingredients to be happy and then all at once, I woke up and realized I’d become so afraid of failure that I’d stopped living at all.”

christopher_arruda_small2
This revelation spawned an explosion of creativity. His debut record “God Hates a Coward” was recorded almost immediately in Victoria, B.C. over the summer of 2009. It was a personal statement for Arruda – a record about hope – about standing for something – about stepping over the edge and taking a chance. While the initial plan was to sell the record at a few local shows, the collection was so well received amongst his peers that a music video was shot for the title track in April 2010 followed by a tour of Western Canada. Christopher returned home to even more good news – he had been selected as one of the top 20 BC acts to participate in the prestigious Peak Performance Project put on by Vancouver’s 100.5 The Peak FM.

His momentum continues to build. By cementing a foundation in Western Canada and surrounding himself with like-minded individuals through the Peak Performance Project, he is an artist poised on the edge of finally reaching his full potential. His performances are bold and varied. One moment a boisterous shout and the next a soft whisper, he strives to connect with his audience through unbridled fervor and a captivating presence. The material also continues to pour forth – a collection of intimate and raw demos entitled The SWAIN EP was released September 5th 2010 to outstanding feedback. The SWAIN EP has already sold out of it’s limited pressing.

With success stacking up behind him, Christopher Arruda is the young Canadian artist to watch. “Find Someone, Build an Empire”, his second full length record is being written with plans to record in the summer of 2011. A national tour will follow. Christopher has been fortunate enough to share the stage with such artists as Thrice, Tegan and Sarah, Acres of Lions, Said the Whale, Hey Ocean!, Maurice, Protest the Hero and Theset.

Chris has a brand new recording available, the Swain EP is available for whatever price you want to pay at christopherarruda.bandcamp.com.

DANIEL MOIR 1
MP3: DANIEL MOIR

SUNDRUNK
(from Get Thorny 3)

This week's featured artist from our
Get Thorny 3 free download compilation (24 artists, 24 tracks) is Daniel Moir. In just a short time, the young singer/songwriter has already accomplished feats that outnumber his few years. Drawing inspiration from personal insight and life experience that varies from a rocky childhood to vagabonding through Europe, Daniel has created a unique blend of folk music that shines wisdom far beyond his years.

Before pursuing a solo career, Daniel honed his performance skills singing, playing and recording with various local Bands. Daniel’s music was soon noticed by producer Tom Dobrzanski, who invited Daniel to his Vancouver studio to work on his debut solo EP, “the Country and the Sea”. The album charted on college radio across Canada and was
Cover Art
heavily licensed, with the song "Change the World" appearing in the season finale of NBC's popular medical-drama, Mercy. This created much hype for this debut full-length album; "Road"."Road" was recorded in Calgary, AB with multi-award and Juno-winning producer Russell Broom (Jan Arden, Emm Gryner, Sam Roberts), and was co-engineered by David Kean (Bjork, Audities Foundation, etc.)

Daniel recently performed in a CBC concert for Alberta Arts Days which was aired to millions as a television special. After several Canadian tours and performances at various festivals, including playing for est. 15,000 at the Edmonton Folk Festival, it is safe to say that the future is bright for Daniel Moir.

As well as being a musician, Daniel is also an accomplished painter, he is dedicated in the practice of meditation and is a nature-enthusiast. He continues to write, record and tour relentlessly.

MP3: SCOTT VALENTINE

Green The New Black (from Get Thorny 3)

This week's featured artist from our Get Thorny 3 compilation (a free download!) is Scott Valentine, based out of Victoria, BC.

Valentine fuses rich and soulful melodies across his unique 5-string acoustic rhythm guitar style while his lyrical tales depict mankind and the struggles of life in the 21st Century. He's a passionate man with a mission, challenging the status quo and inspiring change.

Valentine's music is indie acoustic, folk, soul with a stunning and powerful voice, inspired by the likes of Eddie Vedder and Ray LaMontagne. Check out his epic 5 disc debut album
Seasons, a journey through birth, life and death... and from Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Valentine is currently in the midst of writing songs for his upcoming new album and we hope to have a new song teaser in the next couple of months.

Get Thorny 3 Featured Artist: Fox and the Law

MP3: Fox and the Law
Fairhaven (from Get Thorny 3)

As many of you know, on January 15th we released our latest
Free MP3 Download compilation, Get Thorny 3. If you don't have it yet, download it for free here. Get Thorny 3 features 24 songs from 24 artists, spread out over two different "sides": Side Eh? and Side Be?.

Over the course of the next twenty-four weeks we'll be featuring one band every week who appears on Get Thorny 3, one by one, as they appear in the track listing. So without further delay, ladies and gentlemen I present to you Fox and the Law, from Seattle, the only non-Canadian artist on our latest compilation.
Fox and the Law

Fox and the Law have the distinction of being the first track on Get Thorny 3 with the hauntingly beautiful song, Fairhaven. Truth be told, this track is unlike any others this band has, but there's something about its ethereal mood that I just couldn't ignore. And what better way to kick off the mellower side of our compilation than with this beauty.

So rather than trying to describe this band to you myself, check out this recent review I uncovered:

Fox and The Law Outfox Seattle Rock
By Sara Jayne Crow
Fox and the Law

While Seattle has historically birthed raw, guitar-driven strains of rock—the garage rock of the ‘60s, the psychedelic guitar strains of artists like Jimi Hendrix and the later flannel-laden grunge movement—the Jet City’s rock output has recently tended towards wispy, subdued shoe-gazing. So it’s something of a relief to see a motley group of four mount The Crocodile’s stage on a September night (Guy Keltner, Ryan Granger, Jeff Fairbanks, and Dan O’Neil as Fox and The Law) and shimmy through a set of raw, wall-of-sound, romp ‘n stomp rock. Guy saunters and jumps about the stage as if he’s channeling Pete Townshend, strumming his guitar with such intensity that it seems the strings will break. Jeff (bass) and Ryan (guitar) mirror his licks through ever-progressing, dirty chord changes as Dan anchors in a percussive cacophony.

Fox and The Law are reminiscent of the New York no wave movement frontmen Teenage Jesus and The Jerks and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, or even Tennessee’s Be Your Own Pet. Catching a wave on a riptide of chord progressions and surfing a cavalcade of staggered time measures, the band is Seattle’s next best export.

Breaking News: FREE Single Download from Quartered

Filed in:

The long wait is over, new music from Quartered is here! And in typical Thorny Bleeder fashion, we're giving you this first taste for FREE!

The brand new single Eternity Below is from the upcoming Walks Like A Ghost album, available everywhere on Tuesday, August 24 through Thorny Bleeder Records.

Combining melodic with experimental, heavy sounds through the use of odd time signatures, hook-laden bridges, and solid balls-out brutally hardcore riffs, Quartered's sound can best be described as gutsy and genre defying. But, who do they sound like? Think Deftones meets Alexisonfire, and that'll give you a good starting point.

Having just returned home from a tour of the Philippines where they performed with Lamb Of God, Testament, and Slapshock, Quartered are now gearing up for their 2010 Canadian Summer Tour in support of their highly anticipated new album, Walks Like A Ghost. New dates are being added weekly, so stay tuned to their new show listings on their MySpace page here.

Recorded in Vancouver at the legendary Mushroom Studios, the new album was produced by Ben Kaplan (Chevelle, Trapt, The Gallows, Biffy Clyro).

Ok, let's get to it! Listen to the new single Eternity Below right here, right now...and then just click the Download button for your FREE track!

Vancouver Musician Cultivates Earth Day Interest

Filed in:
Scott Valentine Presents - Earth Day, All Day, Every Day

Victoria BC-based Scott Valentine Delivers Free Music with a Twist

On Earth Day, April 22, Victoria singer/songwriter Scott Valentine is hitting the streets of Vancouver with a new tune…literally.

The homegrown singer/songwriter was moved to action by the insufficient spotlight today’s environmental issues receive. Valentine will be at high-exposure downtown Vancouver locations on
Earth Day, promoting his second single, ‘Green The New Black’ (as heard on 104.3 Shore FM) by handing out 1,000 free music drop cards, each with a unique PIN providing the recipient with a free download of what Valentine hopes will be eventually recognized as the Unofficial Earth Day Anthem.

But there’s a unique twist…these drop cards are made from 100% post-consumer junk mail and embedded with wildflower seeds. After each card has been redeemed it can be planted under a thin layer of soil and it will blossom into a wildflower garden!

“It should be Earth Day, all day, every day,” says Valentine. “I believe this song will plant that seed of awareness. These drop cards are a pretty cool way of celebrating that.”

Anyone interested in receiving a
FREE Seedcard on Earth Day can receive updated location information by following him on Twitter @ScottyTuesday.
